Another day on the hill

November 16th, 2006 at 02:20 pm

Wednesday was another no spend day.

We also had 24 hours of rain, which we needed badly. Living as rurally as we do, the ongoing drought has really worried us. If the well goes, we literally have no choice but to either spend thousands to have a deeper well dug, or we have to move.

When we originally moved out here to the "wilderness", we really thought that we would be able to save money hand over fist. Reality set in shortly thereafter, I'm afraid, and it's just like anywhere else. Saving money is work and takes time and effort. And planning, lots of planning.

We received two more free magazines in the mail on Wednesday, which brings our total savings this week to 40.75.

I really hated it when the well pipes froze in January! Pulling 60 feet of pipe out in freezing temperatures was no fun at all. Fortunately, it didn 't happen but once that I can recall! But more often, the well pump didn't work when the power went out. With all of dad's gadgets, a generator wasn't one of them! The last time that happened while I was visiting, I got a nasty virus (with the works) and no water. My poor parents! But you couldn't believe how awesome the water tasted--and no water bill! The city eventually got water out to their area and a couple of years ago, they got on the line. Easier to sell the house cos they've moved closer to town. But I will miss the ole well.

Good clean well water is priceless. It seems you have to really go some to be in the boonies anymore!
